Sarah's Top Tips to Get to 100 Subscribers

blog getting started May 16, 2024

Launching your subscription box is just the beginning. Discover four steps to grow your subscriber base to 100 and beyond.

Launching your subscription box is a huge milestone. There is so much work that goes into getting to the point where you’re ready to launch.

Identifying your ideal customer, curating your boxes, building your audience, figuring out the tech, the packaging, the shipping, the marketing. It’s a lot. Just getting to launch day can feel like running a marathon.

And when you finally launch? Take a minute to celebrate that.

Inside Launch Your Box, I see this all the time. Members launch their subscription boxes, start refining their processes, begin delighting their subscribers. And then they immediately ask:

“What should my next goal be?”

My answer is almost always the same - Focus on getting to 100 subscribers.

That was my goal when I launched my subscription box. I knew that reaching 100 subscribers would create the kind of recurring revenue and stability I wanted in my business.

You do not need thousands of subscribers to have a successful subscription box business.

In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see subscription box owners make is focusing so much on huge numbers that they forget to focus on the right things. A strong, engaged community of subscribers who love your box will always matter more than chasing vanity metrics.

Today, I want to walk you through four specific things to focus on as you grow your subscription box to 100 subscribers and beyond.

1. Be consistent

Consistency is one of the most important parts of building a successful subscription box business.

Especially when you’re growing.

Your subscribers need to know what kind of experience they’re going to get from your box every single month. Even if the products inside are a surprise, the feeling should be consistent.

Your brand experience should feel familiar, trustworthy, and intentional.

That consistency also applies to how you show up online.

I know it can feel repetitive to talk about your box over and over again. But remember this: most people are not seeing every single thing you post. And even when they do see it, people often need to hear about something multiple times before they’re ready to buy.

So keep showing up.

Talk about your box consistently. Build excitement consistently. Share behind-the-scenes moments consistently.

And just as importantly? Share yourself consistently.

People subscribe to subscription boxes because of the products. But they stay because of the connection.

Your audience wants to know the person behind the box. They want to feel connected to you, your story, your excitement, and your mission.

That’s why I encourage subscription box owners to consistently:

  • Plan your boxes ahead of time
  • Go LIVE regularly
  • Email your list every week
  • Post on social media consistently

Small actions repeated consistently build momentum over time.

2. Nail Your Messaging

Your messaging matters more than most people realize.

You can have a beautiful box, amazing products, and great pricing, but if your messaging doesn’t connect with the right people, growing your subscription will feel much harder than it needs to.

The most successful subscription box owners truly understand their ideal customer.

They know:

  • What their customer struggles with
  • What they enjoy
  • What they value
  • What problems they’re trying to solve
  • What kind of experience they want

But knowing those things isn’t enough.

You have to actually use that information in your messaging.

Your audience should feel understood when they read your emails, your social posts, your website copy, and your sales page.

One of the biggest mindset shifts I teach is to stop talking only about what’s in the box and to start talking about what the box does for your subscriber.

  • How does it make her life easier?
  • How does it help her feel?
  • What problem does it solve?
  • What experience does it create?

That emotional connection matters.

And remember, your messaging doesn’t have to sound polished or perfect. It just needs to sound real and relatable.

Speak in your audience’s language, not marketing language.

3. Create an Offer People Want to Say Yes To

Your offer matters.

And no, that doesn’t just mean having a “good product.”

A strong subscription box offer combines several things:

  • The right products
  • The right experience
  • The right pricing
  • The right positioning

Price matters. It’s not the only thing that matters, but it absolutely plays a role.

You need to understand what your ideal customer is willing to pay and make sure your pricing supports both your customer and your business profitability.

That means paying attention to:

  • Cost of goods
  • Shipping costs
  • Profit margins
  • Packaging expenses
  • Overall customer experience

But beyond pricing, I want you to think about the experience your subscribers are having when they open your box.

That experience is part of your offer.

  • How intentional is your curation?
  • Does everything inside feel connected?
  • Do your products work well together?
  • Do your inserts guide the subscriber through the experience?
  • Does the box feel thoughtful and complete?

The little details matter more than you think.

You do not have to compete by being the cheapest option.

In fact, trying to be the cheapest often creates bigger problems long term. Instead, focus on creating value and delivering an experience your subscribers genuinely love.

4. Show Up and Build Relationships

When someone subscribes to your box, they are making an ongoing commitment to you.

That’s different from a one-time purchase.

Subscribers want to feel connected. They want to feel like they’re part of something. They want to know there’s a real person behind the brand.

That connection matters.

Some of my favorite moments are when subscribers reply to a text or email to tell me how much they loved that month’s box. Those conversations matter because relationships matter.

And relationships are one of the biggest advantages small business owners have.

As you work toward 100 subscribers, focus on building genuine connections with your audience.

  • Go LIVE.
  • Reply to comments.
  • Answer DMs.
  • Send emails consistently.
  • Share stories.
  • Share experiences.
  • Give value.
  • Serve before you sell.

One of the easiest ways to strengthen relationships with your audience is through email marketing. And yes, you should absolutely be emailing your list every single week.

Not just when you’re selling.

Your emails help subscribers and potential subscribers stay connected to you and your brand between launches and renewals.

Wondering what to email every week? This blog post has the answers!

Your First 100 Subscribers Can Change Everything

Reaching 100 subscribers is a major milestone in your subscription box journey.

Not because the number itself is magical, but because of what it represents:

  • Momentum
  • Stability
  • Recurring revenue
  • Confidence
  • Proof that your idea is working

Getting there usually isn’t about one viral reel or one perfect launch.

It’s about consistently showing up. Consistently connecting.  Consistently improving. And consistently serving your audience well.

Focus on those things, and you’ll build a subscription box business that can continue growing long after those first 100 subscribers.

And when you hit that milestone?

I’ll be right here celebrating with you.
