Learn how to choose SEO keywords for your subscription box business and how to use them to increase traffic to your website.

Can SEO make a difference in the growth and success of your subscription box business?

Absolutely.

Simply put, SEO or search engine optimization is all about what you can do to help your audience find your business online. SEO acts as a sort of salesperson for your business, working behind the scenes 24/7, directing potential customers your way.

In other words, SEO helps businesses be found by people who are searching for what they sell

When you do SEO right, you can see results. Results in the form of higher rankings on Google. Keep in mind, SEO is not a quick solution. Think of it as a long-term game - but one you can’t afford not to play.

There is a TON of information about SEO and almost endless things you can do and strategies you can take to optimize your website’s SEO. For today, I’m going to keep things focused on keywords and keyword tools.

What are SEO keywords and why do they matter?

SEO keywords are simply the terms customers use in a search when they’re trying to find an answer to a question, a solution to a problem, or a specific product or service.

Any term used in a search engine is a keyword. They can be single words as well as short or long phrases. You’ll hear them called short-tail or long-tail keywords. This simply refers to the length of the keyword phrase. Both are important.

Your keywords need to appear on your website and in your product descriptions. Use them when describing what you do and the products you’re selling.

SEO is not about being cute or clever. It’s about clearly describing what you do and who you do it for in order to help your business get found by people looking for someone who sells what you sell.

Improving SEO on your website increases your ranking in Google search results and drives more traffic to your website. Getting strategic and specific with your keywords means more of the people coming to your website will be the right people. Your ideal customer.

How can you decide which keywords to use?

Deciding which keywords are the right ones for your subscription box business takes some time and research.

Start by making a list of relevant topics based on your business, your ideal customer avatar (ICA), and the contents of your subscription box.

Brainstorm topics that are important to your business.

Make a list of what you sell. Get specific about the types of items you sell and the occasions your items are perfect for.

If I was doing this for my online shop, my list would include:

  • Personalized gifts
  • The best monogrammed gifts
  • How to style a graphic tee
  • Cute graphic tees with inspirational sayings
  • Custom t-shirts

Brainstorm topics or words your ICA would search in Google to find your product.

In this step, I want you to change your point of view. Instead of thinking about keywords from a business owner's standpoint, I want you to think like your ideal customer. Ask yourself what specific words or phrases they would search in order to find you.

When customers find my Framed website, they’ve searched for things like:

  • Monogrammed gifts for Mother's Day
  • Personalized sweatshirts
  • How do I monogram a bag for a teacher?
  • Monthly t-shirt subscription
  • Monogram service
  • Subscription gift ideas for women

When brainstorming your list, include long-tail keywords (notice how specific some of mine are) and keyword variations. I might include both “graphic tee outfit” and the more specific “edgy ways to style a graphic tee with leggings.”

What SEO keywords should you use for my subscription box business?

Make sure you’re including keywords that will drive traffic to your subscription box. Be specific about who your subscription box is for and the types of products it contains.

  • Subscription boxes for ideal customer or users (mothers, women, entrepreneurs, dogs, teenage girls, etc.).
  • Contents (dog toy, monogram, self-care, etc.) subscription/subscription box.
  • Gift subscription for ideal customer or user.
  • Monthly subscriptions for ideal customer or user.
  • Best subscription boxes for ideal customer or user.
  • Monthly contents subscription.
  • Subscriptions for ideal customer or user.

What SEO keyword tools should you use?

There are many SEO keyword tools available to help you research, find new keywords, and learn more about their search volume. A higher search volume means more potential traffic to your site.

Two of my favorite keyword tools are the autocomplete and related searches features of Google and Pinterest. Simply start typing a keyword phrase and see what else pops up.

Many keyword tools offer free and paid versions. Some of the most popular tools include:

  • Keywords Everywhere
  • Ubersuggest
  • Answer the Public
  • Google Trends
  • Semrush
  • Keyword Tool

Can you use too many keywords?

The short answer is yes, it is possible to use too many keywords. This is referred to as keyword stuffing which is an attempt to trick search engines into ranking your content higher.

Search engines consider keyword stuffing to be a type of spamming. And it is. Instead of increasing your ranking, it will have the opposite effect.

Write naturally and organically. Keep in mind you are writing for human beings first and foremost. Writing with the goal of communicating clearly what you do and who you do it for will naturally include your keywords and result in increased SEO.

Use the keywords directly related to your subscription box business on your website home page, subscription box landing page, and in product descriptions. These new keywords may also inspire ideas for new blog posts, opt-ins, or resources, all of which will drive even more traffic to your website!
